One thing we had noticed since we arrived in Florence is that the food on offer is very "Touristy", you know, Pizzas, the regular pastas....it is very hard to find good local regional food. The other day we were talking to our hosts, Breditz and Nadjia about this, so they gave us a few of recommendations of local food places that they like of which a couple were actually very close by.
So today being a lazy Sunday we thought that we would give a couple of the recommendations a go. For many people Sunday is a day of rest, for us it turned into a day of eating!
At lunch time we went a few hundred metres away to a very little trattoria that was full of locals, Trattoria La Burrasca. We studied the menu outside, good news, not a pizza in sight. We went in and found a table and very shortly got into a discussion with the Waiter/Owner about their great looking menu. He informed us that they only do regional foods, and they change their menu daily depending on what produce they get...now this was the type of restaurant we had been looking for.
Inside Trattoria La Burrasca |
As it turns out we both wanted, and had, the same main meal, a home made pork sausage and bean dish..it was delicious. Of course we had to have the stewed eggplant, salad, bread, and our choice of alcohol to accompany the meal.
Lunch, Italian Style |
Even though we both were feeling quite full, we had to have dessert. We had noticed quite a few people having some sort of alcohol in which they dunked their biscotti. This had us intigued so we both ordered this. The drink it turns out is referred to as "Holy Wine" (as used by priests on Sunday). It is similar to a Muscat but more alcoholic and not as thick, still quite sweet and delicious.

While eating our dessert, another table ordered a Fiorentina Steak to share. The waiter came out with two 1 kilogram monster steaks for them to choose their meal from, they looked incredible (sorry to any Vegetarians who might be reading this post) and we decided there and then that we will be coming back for one of those very soon!
On leaving, we considered going for a walk to burn off some calories, but were too full, so we just went back to our room and relaxed.
After a very casual and easy afternoon, just after six o'clock, we decided that it must be dinner time. However, still feeling a bit full from lunch we decided to just have a light meal or snack. It seemed a good opportunity to try our second close by recommendation, a little bar that brews their own beer, and as it turned out has a very good varied selection from Blondes through Ambers and all the way through to deep coloured Stoats
Birrificio Mostodolce, was even closer to us than Trattoria La Burrasca, it is surprising that we had not found these ourselves, but who cares we have found them now.
Birrificio Mostodolce, Local Brew Pub |
Birrificio Mostodolce brew about eight beers and will have at least five of those on tap at anytime. So we went about tasting a few, normally you would pay 7 Euros for a pint, but we had arrived during "Happy Hour" and were only paying 3.50, bonus!!!
Home Made Chips and Beer...Yum! |
We started off with a light snack of some very nice chips, a perfect food combination match with beer. After the chips had gone, as well as a couple of pints each, we decided to have one more snack....what a mistake!
We ordered a mix Fried Selection for Two, which included Olives, Chicken, Cheese, Polenta, Vegetables, and more Chips...this all sounded great and for just 8 Euros. Then it arrived, it was massive.
Part The Way Through The Fried Selection For Two |
We knew that we had no chance of finishing this, but we gave it a good try, next time this will be our only food order!
So after a good night out we "waddled" home ... sorry but being as full as we were that was the only way to walk. I am sure we said earlier that we were going out for a light snack, what happened? We might have been feeling very full, but we had had a great day eating and drinking good local food and drink, just as we had imagined we would when planning our "gap year".
The End Of Another Good Day |
I would have to say that we have had a great day, however next time, we won't do both of these places again in the same day, just too much of a good thing!
