Fiesole

Only a few kilometres outside of Florence, in the surrounding hills, is the small town of Fiesole. We only found out about this place the other day while we were investigating "Views over Florence" on the Internet, and it sounded like Fiesole had great panoramic views over Florence, so we put it down on the list of "places to see".

We found out that we could get there quite cheaply (less than 5 euros return for the two of us) and in less than half an hour by using the local bus network. So we made our way to the nearby Piazza San Marco and caught the bus to Fiesole. Within a very short time we starting to weave our way through the foothills towards Fiesole.

As we climbed higher the views back to Florence just kept getting better and better, while the surrounding countryside just kept getting prettier.

Great views over Florence

The town of Fiesole is also quite pretty and to our surprise very quiet with only a handful of tourists, which was quite a surprise considering the time of year and close proximity to Florence. Another great plus of being here in the hills was the light breeze blowing through the town which made it a very pleasant day indeed.

We walked around and explored the town, which was not too hard to do as it is quite small. The one disappointing thing of the day was that the Roman ruins were closed for the day...we will have to come back another day for those.

If you cannot own one, take a photo and pretend!

We found a great little spot over looking a valley with great views that we sat and admired for quite a while. Lesley seemed a little distracted though, then I realised she had her eye on someones little red Fiat 500, I hoped the owner returned soon before she decided to take up picking locks!

Lovely views, lovely wife

After a bit more exploring it came to that time of day again...lunch! So we went to Restaurant Aurora that we had spotted earlier

The view from our table, yes, that is Florence down there!

After lunch we went for a short walk to burn off some of the calories, but only got far as a strip of cafes in the Main Street where we stopped for some Tiramisu and coffee, so much for burning calories!

Tiramisu time!!

After dessert went down, well almost, we strolled across the road and caught the bus back down to Florence.
