We have a car booked for the next ten or so days as we have a bit of a road trip planned that will take us to Burgos, Salamanca, Toledo, Cordoba, Granada, and finally Seville....heading towards warmer weather..we hope!
So this morning we said our goodbyes to the wonderful staff at Aida...Jokin, Carlos, and of course Agur..we then walked to Plaza de Gipuzkoa to catch the bus to San Sebastián airport to get to the car hire company there. So while we were waiting for the bus we headed across the road to Baque Cafe for a last coffee..and a heap of their tasty pastries.
Soon we were on the bus heading to the airport, we met another couple of Aussies from Balwyn who had just walked some of the Camino de Santiago and were about to head off to Barcelona....so we had to give them a number of tips about great places to eat....gees made us hungry talking about them.
When we picked up our Skoda from the rental company the manager there checked with us a number of times that we were not going into France, we assured him that we had no interest, we had been there, we were here to explore Spain........"Good" he replied as there would be insurance problems otherwise
He took us to the car, we threw in the bags, got comfortable, setup our GPS to go to Burgos, which suddenly reset itself and then asked us if we wanted to continue our trip, I selected YES and off we set.
For the next half an hour or so the GPS guided us through some very beautiful countryside until we came to the coast..on our left hand side!!!!!!! WHAT!!!! That was impossible, the coast could only be on our left hand side if we were if France not Spain........Oh oh......Sure enough we had driven half an hour in the wrong direction into France....criminals....we promised we would not go to France, and now we were driving uninsured....mad criminals!!!!
We Had Become Criminals!!! |
I have no idea where the GPS was taking us, so I reset it to Burgos.....we did a U-turn and continued our journey to Burgos...in SPAIN!!!
We would have to say that the Basque region of Spain has some beautiful countryside, but some of the most ugliest buildings around, and some of the worst town planning that would challenge the Italians!!!
However, the countryside started to change and we started to get views of fantastic snow capped mountains. The first range we came across were massive and covered in clouds, Lesley decided to take a picture, but by the time she got out the camera, set it up....this was the picture she got!!!
Look Very Carefully There Are Snow Covered Mountains..Somewhere!!!! |
Oh well, at least her in car photography skills improved on the journey and she managed to get some great shots of other mountains along the way.
Snow Capped Mountains On The Way To Burgos |
The drive itself was mainly on freeways and good quality roads, but the towns we passed through bordered on being very unattractive.....and the landscape did take on a very Australian feel with the dry brown grass everywhere. But Lesley had the photography bug and was taking photos at every opportunity...here are some from her collection.

Now while she was doing this I was making good time, even on the single laned roads full of trucks. I had my overtaking manouvres down pat........suddenly a blaze of red and blue lights appeared in the mirror.....the Police...they signalled for me to pull over....... What was the problem? Was it because we had gone to France? No, it appeared that not everyone was impressed with my overtaking skills...an on the spot 40 euro fine was handed over......criminal...again!! Unlike Australia an on the spot fine means you pay there and then....cash and receipts were exchanged!!
Thanks goodness Lesley put the camera away, they did not seem very happy with me as it was...photos of the near arrest would have just upset them more....gees, they even checked my photo against a list of photos of wanted and known criminals!!!

So, with two rules/laws broken for the day, Bonnie and Clyde continued the rest of their uneventful journey to Burgos!!!!
