The old tower that we look out of bedroom window at is called Torre Di Gombito, and you can only go to the top on Monday's, so today was the day. When I suggested this to Lesley she just looked at me as if I was insane, and quite happily told me "You can go up it yourself if you want, I am happy to just stay here and chill-out".
Okay, I had permission (you have to get permission when you have been married as long as us!), so off I went. For a few Euros you could join a group of no more than 8 people (plus a guide) and make you way to the top.
Most of the stairs are easy to climb, they are wide timber, recently built, however, the last flight are the original steps and are quite uneven and narrow...it would have been murder trying to get to the top if all of the steps were like the old original ones!
The new staircase was easy to climb |
The older steps were bit more of a challenge |
Once at the top I was faced with great views over both Citta Alta and Citta Basa as well as hazy views off into the distance.
Looking North |
Looking South |
Looking down on our B&B |
One thing that did surprise me was to see a hill that looked down on us that was not too far away, I asked the guide what it was called and how easy was it to get there......
Looking up at San Vigilio |
It was a small village called San Vigilio and could easily be reached by a Ferniculare that could be found just outside of the Citta Alta walls just past the bus station where we arrived.......well that's something else we will have to do, write that down on the list.
