I know we've only been in Italy a short time but really!!! trying to find somewhere to wash your clothes is near impossible. I understand now why everywhere you go you'll always find a slight and sometimes not so slight scent of dank sweaty clothes permeating the air. Putting this down to the tourist of course and not the locals.
Fortunately the tourist information centre was literally 15 meters from our accommodation. We popped across to find the nearest laundrette / laundromat and were told by the lovely young Italian girl who spoke english well, that we were in luck. A new laundry had opened just two days ago. She instructed us to "just walk to the end of the street and you'll find it". So we set off with a backpack full of dirty washing. Now we had not walked along this street before. Have I already mentioned that walking down a street here in Bergamo usually means walking, down, down and still further down. Alas we reached the bottom and no laundrette in sight. This couldn't be right, the girl's instructions had been so easy.
We returned to our room somewhat dismayed and decided to have a nap. Well at least I did while Glenn a little concerned he was down to his last pair of socks and jocks decided to play scout and go hunt down that laundrette. Upon his return a little later he declared he'd found it but unfortunately not a laundrette as we might know it, but rather a kind of dry cleaners...so I guess some hand washing was in-store.
Fontana del Lantro - Hmm, so where do I put the detergent? |
Eventually got a small amount of washing done, wrung it out by hand, then made what I thought was an ingenious clothes line. The shower head was one of those detachable kinds that are mounted on a bracket on the wall. So detached it and hung it over the shower door and made a kind of line just long enough to drape G's jocks over. Unfortunately, despite the heat here they were still quite wet the next morning, so another ingenious idea came to mind...when desperate use a hair dryer. Worked like magic and in only 30 minutes.
