Getting To Monflanquin

With a few stops on the way, the drive took us just over 3 hours, and most of it was through some lovely French countryside.

Initially after leaving Magnac-Bourg we were on the motorway making very good distance and time. After about three quarters of an hour we turned off the motorway and onto a series of good country roads.

The Incredible Chateau At Montfort

The Chateau de Montfort soon came into view, it is placed high on a rocky ledge overhanging the village of Montfort, and the cliffs and broad meander in the Dordogne river below. Said to be destroyed and rebuilt four times, Chateau Montfort has had a turbulent history, and undergone a great deal of change during its 800 years existence. It is now a private building and we could not visit it, however, just seeing it was enough.

The Village Of Cenac-et-Saint Julien

We were in some beautiful countryside and driving through some very nice villages when we came across the small village of Saint Pompon....it was picture book perfect, we had to stop and have a look around.

Moving on we just kept finding cute villages, having to stop and take photos.

The Village Of Prats-Du-Perigord
The Village Of Cuzorn

After about three hours or so after leaving Magnac-Bourg, Monflanquin came into view. Monflanquin is rated as one of France's Most Beautiful Villages as well as being a Bastide town (hilltop fortress). We stopped and grabbed some lunch and had a look around.

We also stopped in a local bar where I came across the beer I had enjoyed so much in Venice, Grimbergen..this time a Rouge beer made with the additional of red fruits...delicious.

The locals were watching local rugby on TV, and once they found out I was from Australia wanted to talk about rugby and the Australian players playing in France......the conversations most probably looked very funny to any onlookers, but what the heck, we had a great time!

Eventually, we settled into our little gite just outside of Monflanquin, named Josse.

Our hostess here is a lovely English lady called Nicole, she made us feel very welcome and nothing is too much trouble....I think we will really enjoy ourselves here.
