Like the other villages we had seen today Auvillar is a hill top village. However, this did seem to be the bigger of the three, and initially it did not seem that nice.....but its beauty was hidden.
Approaching Auvillar |
The main street had a few attractive buildings, but not enough to make it on the beautiful villages of France website, well not in our opinion anyway. It also had an amazing church that was partially in ruins at one end off the village.

We walked around a few of the streets but it was all very ordinary. Then we noticed an archway in the clock tower in the main street......a bit like Alice going down the rabbit hole, we entered...ah ha...we walked into the great medieval part of the village.

The first thing we saw was an amazing round building in the centre of the square, we have no idea what it was for but are still trying to find out.

I am so glad we persisted in walking around trying to work out what was so special about this village, because the medieval part was just brilliant to see.
We spent a while walking around Auvillar before deciding to head back to Monflanquin.
