Crossing The Causeway

Looking out of our apartment window we can see Mouse Island, Vlaherna Monastery, and the Kanoni Peninsula. We can actually walk to the peninsula in about 10 minutes, whereas if we were to drive it would take closer to 30 minutes....the reason for this is there is a small causeway/walkway that crosses the water between Perama and Kanoni. So today we decided to explore across the causeway. The causeway is a rough concrete structure that allows you easy walking access across to the other side, however, many of the locals on theor motorbikes also use this route to save time, so you just squeeze up against the low wall to let them pass.

First Time We Have Had Clouds In Corfu

The casueway itself is actually a suprisingly popular tourist attraction in itself, many come here to watch the planes come in and out of Corfu International Airport. We have seen many planes fly past our apartment since we have been here, so halfway across the causeway we sat down with the many other tourists and waited for a plane to come in....you generally do not have to wait long if you pick the right time of day...within 5 minutes we had one come in....boy, they do get close!

Here It Comes....

Within a few minutes we were on the other side looking at the other side of the monastery and a small tour boat coming back from Mouse Island. You can catch these boats to Mouse Island for a couple of euros each..another must do on the list!

The View From Vlaherna Monastery Towards Kanoni

The monastery was built in the 12th century, and like many popular churches in Europe has a small souvenir shop, in this one Lesley was able to buy one of the best Greek cookbooks she has come across...you may say "Why didn't you buy a religious artefact?"...well, if you know Lesley then you would know that she most probably had!

The next task was to climb the hill to the top of the Kanoni Peninsula and a number of Cafes that we could see up there. The view from Kanoni across to Mouse Island and the Vlaherna Monastery is most probably the most famous photo of Corfu (if not Greece), and really is quite beautiful.

Kanoni was named after the battery of artillery established by the French in 1798. One of the battery's cannons still stands near one of the cafes found on the original site.

Once at the top we had to stop for one of our favourite Greek refreshments...Iced Coffee. Now this Iced Coffee is made with no Ice Cream!! But tastes really nice....just coffee, water, a little bit of sugar, and a blast from a Bamix gives it a frothy almost creamy texture...delicious!

Looking At Our Apartment In Perama

We also found a great little beach with a bar over here, quite secluded and very nice....will have to come back here as it is only about a 15 minute walk.

Little Secluded Beach

We had a great day exploring around Kanoni and decided to eat locally at a little taverna close to the apartment...not our best decision to date.

Cute Looking Taverna, But That Was All...

Great location but the food was not the best...most of the menu was aimed at tourists and included Italian dishes as the majority of their offerings.......

However, we both managed to find local dishes, Lesley had a Moussaka, but it was mostly béchamel sauce, while I had a Slow Cooked Beef dish that turned out to be mainly salt...oh, well..we have done very well with food in Corfu up until now.

Watch Out For Buses!!
Fireworks

The walk back to the apartment was only 10 minutes but can get a bit hairy in stages when the footpaths disappear and you have to walk on the side of the road...in the dark, with buses...

On the way back we were treated to fireworks coming from the Kanoni Peninsula...we do not think it was anything official. most probably someones birthday as they only lasted about 30 seconds. Oh well, safely back in the apartment after another great day in Corfu!
