Old Lyon - Part Two

When we walked out of the Fourviere Fenicular Station we were looking straight at the magnificent "Basilique Notre Dame de Fourviere"...it is actually considered to a "minor" basilica...could have fooled me, I thought it looked quite big. It was built over 12 years starting in 1872...still sounds big to me.

Hello Up There!!

It has the best views over Lyon, and on a clear day you can see as far as the Swiss Alps....I am afraid that today was not a very clear day, but we did get great views over the rest of Lyon.

We then made our way around to some Roman ruins just about 400m away, they consist mainly of two Ampitheatres, one large and one smaller.

After spending a while exploring the ruins we caught the fenicular back to the lower level of the old town.

As we approached the Place de St. Jean near the Cathedrale St. Jean we could hear lots of children screaming and shouting, as we came into the square we found them all holding balloons and forming a large circle in the square........how many of you can remember doing something like this is a child? Each balloon had a tag, with the childs name and the schools contact details on, the whole idea is that people find the broken balloons and contact the school...the winner is the one that's balloon went the furthest...ahhhh, great childhood memories!

Eventually we made our way back over the River Saone to our apartment, what a lovely day!
