Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil and Surrounds

The great thing about Sarlat is that we really do not have to drive that far to find beautiful places, we are surrounded by them.

Today we drove just half and hour and ended up in the town of Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil, a place famous in the scientific world for the discovery of some of the earliest examples of Homo Sapien skeletons in the mid 1800's....this whole region of France has an amazing prehistoric history.

The New and The Old

Les Eyzies de Tayac Sireuil offers visitors one main reason for visiting....the very spectacular cliff face buildings. This whole area has these types of cliffs that early man from over thousands of years ago developed into places to live by carving dwelling areas into them....these dwellings have been continued to be developed over the centuries with many housess incorporated into the cliff faces.....just incredible to see.

What makes these look so amazing is the fact that the newer town has been built around the old cliff face and these buildings

Cannot Get Enough Of This

We then moved onto the Beautiful Village of Limeuil. just a further 15 minutes down the road. We actually came into the back of the town up a very steep hill to a car park near a small chateau.

From here we walked around the top part of the town and the little square and old church.

We then made our way down a very steep hill that wound through the rest of the village.

We finally found ourselves down at the rivers edge....this is where the rest of the toursits were...they had driven around the base of the village whereas we had driven straight up into it.

It was not hard to see why this was rated as a beautiful village, it was lovely.

The worst thing about this place was the fact that we were at the bottom and the car was up the top....you guessed it, Lesley let me go back up by myself, fetch the car, and then drive down and pick her up, I was knackered by the time I got back to the car!

Buildings In Cliff Faces

It was time to make our way back to Sarlat as we had old school friends who were going to meet us in Sarlat and stay for a few days. Richard and Jackie have lived in France for a number of years now, and they live about a 5 hour drive north, just outside of the city of Orleans.
