Domme Is Good, But Rocamadour Is Better

Richard and Jackie came to our place just after 10am, and I think we were all feeling a bit tired, but it has been worth it as it has been so good catching up with each other.

Initially we headed off to Domme, a small medieval hilltop village just south of where we are at Sarlat, it is a village I have wanted to see for a while after talking to some English people at a market who raved about it.

Domme is at the top of a very high hill (250 metres above sea level) that has amazing views across the surrounding counrtyside, and some of the best are from the carpark at the top near the village square.

As we approached the square we realised that the market was on....no, we did not go because of the market...it just happened to be on...bonus!

We had a walk around the square and then down a few of the great looking lanes coming off of it. We finally stopped at a great little restaurant and grabbed our morning coffees.

We then worked our way back to the carpark.....Richard and Jackie suggested we go to Rocamadour, which we did not know anything about, so off we set.

After an hour Rocamadour came into view.....wow, what an amazing looking place.

We stopped for lunch at a small eatery that had the amazing view across the town that is shown in the photo above. After lunch we made our way around the top of the valley to a carpark sitting above the village. To save our legs we caught the cable car down to the church level to have a look around.

The church here is very famous and was known for its miracles so has been a pilgramage point for centuries. It contains a wooden Black Madonna reputed to have been carved by Saint Amator (Amadour) himself.....I will not bore you with a history lesson, but it is very interesting.

We eventually decided it was time to head back to Sarlat, so we made our way back to the car, setup the GPS and let it guide us home. On the way back I had to stop to take a photo of a fantastic looking chateau on a cliffs edge, but as I write this blog I realise that I do not know where it is....somewhere between Rocamadour and Sarlat...I will have to see if I can find it on the Internet.

What A View

Back at Sarlat we had another meal at our apartment with Richard and Jackie.....another late night....well, they do sat that time flies when you are having fun!
