North To The Cote-du-Rhone

The very large and very famous French wine region of the Cote-du-Rhone lies just north of Avignon. So as today was the last day we would have a hire car we had to go and explore.

You can actually drive for kilometres through acres and acres of vineyards with not much else to look at, so we headed for the small villages on the perimeter of the region.....and we found some nice ones.

In case you are wondering, we did not taste any wines today because there is a big wine festival in Avignon tomorrow, and they will all be coming to us!!!

Vines Everywhere
Our Little Peugot

The first village we visited was the hilltop village of La-Roque-sur-Ceze that was surrounded by vineyards and looked quite a picture as we approached it. To get into the village we had to wait our turn at traffic lights and then cross one of the most narrow bridges you have seen...glad we only had the little Peugot...even then I was holding my breathe all the way across!!!

La-Roque-sur-Ceze
That Bridge!!

La-Roque-sur-Ceze is a great old medieval village all built from the local stone, and really did look amazing.

As we walked around the town we had that old feeling....strangers in town!!.....everyone had disappeared. It was like being back around Magnac-Bourg when we first got to France. But here we were again in an agricultural part of France and again there were no people to be seen!!!!

Lane Ways and Buildings

We walked through the town to the top where there were some lovely views of the surrounding countryside. We also came across a great little restaurant.....closed except for weekends!!!!!

Not Open Today

Just below the village is the River Ceze and some beautiful (but small) waterfalls, or cascades...it was worth coming here just to see these, they were beautiful.

The next village we went to, Aigueze, was only 20 minutes away so we thought we would head there and have lunch. What we found was another spectacular village perched on the cliffs above the river

One thing we have noticed travelling around this area of France at this time of year...this is when the locals repair everything.....roads, buildings, the lot!!!! I suppose tourist season is over so it gives them chance to get tthings done.....for us it has meant some great photos have been ruined by repair works, and today was no exception.

Cute Buildings....Being Renovated!

We found a realy nice looking restaurant right in the middle of the village....closed.....only open weekends ...not again!!!!

Nice But Closed

So it was back to the car and look for somewhere to eat!! So we headed for the next village on our list, Seguret.

Seguret is set on a hillside and looks spectacular. We drove up through the town and its very, very narrow lanes....scarey!!!! Again, by holding my breathe the car managed to fit through....However, we did not stay long...why? Because everything was closed!!!!!

Seguret

So we headed down the road to Sablet, a slightly bigger town, and found a sports bar that was open and serving food. Lesley was not to keen, it was full of men smoking and drinking and having lunch...not sure where the women folk were? But they did serve up a very good Plate Of The Day special......a very rich and tasty Spaghetti Bolognese.....went down very well with a couple of glasses of local red!

Heading To Sablet

So after an unusual, but enjoyable day we headed back to Avignon for a coffee at a very nice cafe bar close to the apartment.

Coffee Time

We are both looking forward to the Millevin wine festival tomorrow, sounds like it is going to be very good.
